Acupuncture
In traditional Chinese medicine, disease is caused by disruptions in the flow of Chi, or energy, in the body. Energy flows through channels called meridians. Each meridian has many acupuncture points along it. Disposable, painless acupuncture needles are used at specific acupuncture points to stimulate the correct flow of Chi through the meridians. Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of complaints including (but not limited to): allergies, chronic pain, dysmenorrhea, insomnia, sciatica, sprain, morning sickness, headache/migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, depression, anxiety, facial pain, tooth pain, postoperative pain, stroke, induction of labor, malposition of an unborn child, diarrhea/constipation, sinusitis, nausea & vomiting, bladder dysfunction, osteoarthritis, and more.

Cupping
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin. Practitioners believe this mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created using mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps). Cupping is used to treat muscle tension as well as scar tissue from injuries and surgery. In Chinese medicine it is also used to treat asthma, lung problems, and open up all the meridians on the back.

Body Work
Myofascial Release
Myofascia = Myo = muscle. Fascia is the tissue that covers muscles, nerves, bones, ligaments, tendons, organs, bursae, etc. Myofascial release is a treatment intended to release tension in the fascia due to trauma (direct, repetitive motion, posture). If there has been trauma, the body tries to stabilize it by creating scar tissue or adhesions. Adhesions are sticky and do not let the muscles slide and glide as they are supposed to causing pain and improper function.

Visceral Manipulation
Visceral Manipulation is an effective therapy in treating a wide range of digestive issues including acid reflux, hiatal hernia, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea, nutrient deficiency disorders, gall bladder problems and more. Visceral Manipulation is also a very effective therapy in relieving menstruation and menopause issues.

Manual Nerve and Vessel Therapy
Manual Nerve Therapy provides assessment and treatment approaches to address restrictions of the neural components not commonly focused on with musculoskeletal symptoms. Neural Manipulation identifies and releases local nerve restrictions while at the same time examines the effect these local fixations have on the rest of the body, and by accessing this relationship, resolves the more comprehensive (global) dysfunctional patterns.

Manual Lymphatic Therapy
Manual Lymphatic Therapy releases restrictions along the vascular structures using direct techniques on the arteries like compression, decompression and elongation. Increased blood circulation to an organ improves function of the viscera, and improves the blood circulation to organs, directly and/or indirectly. Excellent for use after trauma and post-surgery, when conventional musculoskeletal techniques give limited pain and functional relief.

Craniosacral Therapy
Cranial-Sacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the cranial-sacral system. By complementing the body's natural healing processes, Cranial-Sacral Therapy is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease. It is also effective for a wide range of emotional and medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.

Non-Surgical Decompression Treatment

A decompression treatment slowly and gently lengthens or releases pressure in the spine through repetitive movements.  The table pulls and releases, creating pressure change within the invertebral disc, surrounding soft tissue and joints.  This pressure change allows the disc bulges or herniations and nutrients to be pulled back into the disc.  Rehydration of the disc and surrounding tissues creates a physiological change which assists the body's natural healing process.
Rates: $125 per session which includes a chiropractic adjustment and a decompression table treatment. Or, purchase a package of four sessions and get the fifth session for free.

Auto Accidents

Car Accidents happen often, and many auto accident injuries do not show symptoms until weeks or even months after the crash occurs. Although these symptoms may appear invisible, there can be internal damage to the musculoskeletal system and soft tissues. At San Juan Chiropractic in Montrose, Colorado, our entire wellness team has helped many patients safely recover from whiplash and other car accident injuries.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) works by increasing the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to body tissues through the bloodstream. During HBOT patients lie inside pressurized chambers breathing 100 percent pure oxygen (natural air contains 21 percent oxygen).

HBOT provides patients with the following benefits:

·       Increased oxygen delivery to injured tissue.

·       Greater blood vessel formation.

·       Advanced wound healing.

·       Improved infection control.

·       Preservation of damaged tissues.

·       Elimination or reduction of effects of toxic substances.

·       Reduction or elimination of tissue obstruction by gas bubbles.

Here at San Juan Chiropractic, we have a hard side hospital grade 3.0 ata chamber:

Hard-Wall Hyperbaric Chambers (also referred to as hard-shell or “steel” chambers) are made from rigid materials such as steel or acrylic and are constructed as an enclosed environment to increase the pressure within that environment at pressures greater than atmospheric pressures, generally from 1.0 ATA to 3.0 ATA.
There are two main categories of hard-sided hyperbaric chambers (for human use) and this is the one we have.

FAQ's:

1. What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)? Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment where you breathe 100% oxygen inside an air pressurized chamber (typically 2–3 times normal atmospheric pressure). This floods your blood and tissues with extra oxygen to promote healing, fight infection, and reduce inflammation. It's FDA-approved for specific conditions and delivered in clinical settings.

2. What conditions or injuries is HBOT used for?

FDA-approved uses include anemia, decompression sickness (the bends), carbon monoxide poisoning, non-healing wounds (e.g., diabetic foot ulcers or post surgical wounds), radiation tissue damage, certain infections (like gas gangrene), air or gas embolism, crush injuries, and more. It's often used as an adjunct for chronic wounds that haven't healed with standard care.

Common Off-Label Uses and Current Evidence Overview

Here's a breakdown of frequently discussed off-label applications, based on reviews from medical literature, UHMS-related discussions, and clinical sources (note: evidence levels vary widely, and many remain investigational):

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), including mild TBI/concussion and post-concussive syndrome Some studies (including small trials and case series) suggest potential benefits like reduced inflammation, improved neurological function, and symptom relief (e.g., headaches, cognitive issues). It's popular in sports medicine and veteran care.

  • Stroke (acute or post-stroke recovery) Explored for neuroprotection and recovery promotion via increased oxygen delivery and angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth).

  • Long COVID / Post-COVID symptoms Emerging interest, with some prospective studies and registries showing improvements in fatigue, cognitive symptoms, quality of life, and psychological issues. A few randomized trials report benefits, but others (e.g., in severe ARDS cases) show no clear reduction in ICU needs or mortality. Still very investigational.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and anxiety Some centers report neurological healing, stem cell mobilization, and symptom improvement. Preliminary evidence is encouraging for some patients, but not conclusive.

  • Lyme disease (chronic/post-treatment) Used for persistent symptoms, inflammation, or autoimmune aspects. Anecdotal success reported.

  • Fibromyalgia and chronic pain conditions (e.g., complex regional pain syndrome) Potential anti-inflammatory effects and pain relief noted in some cases.

  • Alzheimer's disease, dementia, cognitive decline, and anti-aging/wellness Promoted for brain oxygenation and neuroprotection, with some small studies.

  • Other examples: Cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sports injuries/recovery, autoimmune disorders (e.g., arthritis, mold toxicity), cancer adjunct, and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (UHMS supports but FDA does not, so off-label per FDA).

3. How does HBOT work? The increased pressure and pure oxygen dramatically boost oxygen levels in your blood plasma (beyond what red blood cells carry). This helps oxygen reach areas with poor blood flow, stimulates new blood vessel growth, supports white blood cells in fighting bacteria, and reduces inflammation.

4. What happens during a typical HBOT session? You take off your shoes and remove anything containing a battery. You enter the chamber. The chamber pressurizes slowly (ascending in an airplane but in reverse), which may cause ear popping—yawning, swallowing, or Valsalva maneuver helps. Pressurization can take 5-15 minutes depending on your comfort. Sessions last 60–90 minutes, during which you can relax, read a book or nap. The door is closed using pressure, not a latch. Pressure will be gradually reduced at the end until the chamber is completely depressurized. The door opens automatically.

5. Does HBOT hurt? Is it safe? HBOT is pain free for most people. The main sensation is ear pressure (similar to flying or diving), which is manageable. HBOT is generally safe when done in facilities with doctors who oversee trained staff. Side effects are usually mild. You will be required to disclose your health history beforehand to make certain you are a candidate for HBOT. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers can be pressurized using either ambient air (only 21% oxygen) or pure oxygen (100% oxygen). There is significantly higher risk of fire associated with oxygen pressurized chambers. Typically these chambers require many more safety precautions than air pressurized chambers. Our chambers are air pressurized and the risk of fire is very low. However, we still take every precaution to keep our patients safe.

6. What are the common side effects or risks?

  • Ear/sinus/tooth pressure or pain (barotrauma, most common).

  • Temporary vision changes (e.g., nearsightedness that resolves).

  • Fatigue or lightheadedness after sessions.

8. How many treatments do I need, and how often? It varies by condition—often 20–40 sessions for more serious conditions and 2-10 visits for less serious ailments. HBOT can be done for wellness also as it is proven to contribute significantly to anti-aging and as a preventative for nearly everything imaginable.

9. Is HBOT covered by insurance? Yes, for FDA-approved indications (e.g., many chronic wounds), Medicare and most private insurers cover it, often following Medicare guidelines. Pre-authorization and evaluation are typically required. Off-label uses may not be covered.

For personalized advice, please call our office for a consultation with our certified Undersea Functional Medicine Doctor, Dr. Bourgeois, as HBOT requires a prescription and medical oversight. The FDA warns against unapproved home or cosmetic uses due to safety risks.

Infrared Sauna

What is an infrared sauna?
Unlike traditional steam saunas, an infrared sauna does not heat the air around you. Instead infrared saunas heat the body directly, warming the entire system. Because of this, an infrared sauna can operate at a lower temperature and still raise the body’s core temperature and creating a deep detoxifying sweat. Our Alpha Wellness Sensations Near Infrared Sauna penetrates the body more deeply than far infrared and is electromagnetically safer.

Near Infrared Sauna Benefits:
1.) Detoxification
“Detoxification is important because it strengthens the body’s immune system and helps the body’s biochemical processes function efficiently so that we are better able to digest the nutrients in our foods. Detoxification has also been shown to be helpful with colitis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, auto-immune disease, immune deficiency states, autism, ADD and ADHD.”  -Dr. Rachel West
2.) Relaxation
3.) Improved Sleep
4.) Weight Loss

5.) Pain Relief
Relief from a number of ailments including chronic fatigue syndrome, sports injuries like sprains and strains, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and many more. Infrared wavelengths penetrate the body to create heat, which creates profound therapeutic benefits. They increase blood flow to the muscles, delivering more concentrated oxygen, which creates more energy to heal. – Dr. Jeffrey Spencer – University of Southern California
6.) Improved Cardiovascular Health
At the highest temperatures of our Alpha Wellness Sensations Sauna, the heart rate can be raised high enough to mimic exercise. For those with cardiovascular illness, this temperature can be lowered to eliminate risk as well.
7.) Lowered Blood Pressure
8.) Improved Circulation
9.) Anti-Aging through skin detoxification
10.) Wound Healing
11.) Immunity through improved cellular health
